The Philippine National Police honored two officers who were injured during a daring rescue operation in Angeles City, Pampanga, that resulted in the rescue of two Chinese nationals and the arrest of two kidnappers.

Police Staff Sergeant Nelson Santiago was killed in the line of duty during the Aug. 3 operation, while Police Chief Master Sergeant Eden Accad was wounded. Santiago was pronounced dead on arrival at the Angeles University Foundation Medical Center, while Accad is receiving treatment for his injuries.

Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, the PNP chief, awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan to Santiago’s family and provided financial assistance during a visit to the officer’s residence. Marbil also visited Accad at the hospital on Aug. 6 and awarded him the Medalya ng Kadakilaan and Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting, in addition to providing financial assistance.

“The bravery and sacrifice of our officers are beyond measure,” Marbil said in a statement. “We honor their courage and will ensure that justice is served.”

Marbil added that the PNP will continue to prioritize public safety and security while supporting the families of personnel who risk their lives in the line of duty.
