Philippine authorities have successfully sealed nine leaking valves on a sunken oil tanker off the coast of Bataan province, averting a potential environmental catastrophe, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Sunday.

The MT Terra Nova, carrying industrial fuel oil (IFO), sank in the waters near Limay, Bataan, prompting an urgent response operation. Divers from Harbor Star, a maritime services company, confirmed the presence of leaking valves early Sunday morning and immediately began sealing operations.

“The application of the second layer of sealant was completed at approximately 10:42 AM,” a PCG spokesperson told Reuters. “Divers are continuing to monitor the valves to ensure the absence of any further IFO leakage.”

The incident has drawn high-level attention, with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista issuing directives for swift action. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan has ordered all necessary measures to be taken to prevent further environmental impact.

“We are working closely with the shipping company and the contracted salvage team to mitigate any potential damage,” Admiral Gavan said in a statement.

Environmental groups have expressed concern over the potential impact on marine ecosystems in the area, which is known for its rich biodiversity.

The PCG has not yet provided details on the quantity of oil that may have leaked before the valves were sealed, nor on the total volume of IFO aboard the sunken vessel.

Authorities are expected to release a comprehensive progress report in the coming days, detailing the next steps in the salvage operation and any environmental assessment findings.
