A local coffee brand from Salcedo, Eastern Samar, is making waves in the city of Borongan.

Tagbacan Coffee, produced by the Tagbacan Coconut Farmer’s Association, is now serving cups of freshly brewed coffee at Baybay, Boulevard, a popular spot for surfing enthusiasts and tourists.

The coffee brand is the result of a community effort that started in 2019, when the coconut farmers decided to plant coffee trees as an intercrop with their coconut trees.

The farmers do everything from planting, harvesting, processing, drying and milling the coffee beans at Barangay Tagbacan, Salcedo. They also package and market their own product, which comes in two varieties: Robusta and Arabica.

The president of the association, Kuya Raymundo Awa-ao, 48, is the one who personally brings the coffee grounds, coffee maker and other necessary items to the coffee stall at Baybay, Boulevard.

He opens the stall every day at 6 a.m., since Nov. 24th, and sells the coffee for an affordable price. He said that they are not after the profit, but rather the exposure of their brand and product to the public.

He also keeps a meticulous record of the number of cups he sells on a daily basis, which ranges from 11 to 16 cups.

He said that he is happy with the feedback he receives from the customers, who appreciate the quality and taste of the coffee. He hopes that more people will try and support their local coffee, which is not only delicious, but also helps the livelihood of the coconut farmers.

Tagbacan Coffee is a testament to the resilience and innovation of the coconut farmers, who have faced many challenges and difficulties in their industry. By venturing into coffee production, they have created a new source of income and pride for their community. They also showcase the rich and diverse agricultural products of Eastern Samar, which deserve more recognition and appreciation.

So, the next time you visit Baybay, Boulevard, why not have a sip of Tagbacan Coffee and enjoy the view of the waves and the surfers? You will not only savor a great cup of coffee, but also support a worthy cause.
