Reporting Stories Without Borders
There are many reasons why people read comments on news articles. One reason is that reading other people’s responses on a topic can help us understand and process information and events. In fact, 85% of us say that reading other people’s responses helps us understand and process information and events. This means that comments actually have the power to change our minds, and science backs this up. A study on news sites showed that comments that simply attack the author, with no facts at all, are enough to change our perception of a story.
Another reason is that comments can provide a sense of community and connection with others who share similar views or experiences. People may also read comments to gain different perspectives or to engage in discussions and debates.
However, it’s important to note that not all comments are constructive or helpful. Some comment sections can devolve into insults, threats, arguments, and harassment if left unchecked. It’s important to approach comment sections with a critical eye and to be mindful of the potential impact on our mental health.
